Upgrade Sony Xperia U ST25i to ICS 4.0.4 via Cyanogenmod 9.3

Sony finally rolled out Android 4.0.4 ICS update for Xperia U ST25i smartphone. Not only you but developers around the world were also waiting for the update to release, so that they can make a modified version of it in order to boost the performance and increase smoothness of your smartphone. But Cyanogenmod is a Custom ROM that doesn’t wait for Official update to come out, because it is completely based on AOSP sources and hence it can provide you the latest Android version straight on your mobile.

Cyanogenmod 9.3 is based on original Android 4.0.4 ICS source code. CM team has modified the original OS such that you can use the phone without having any bugs like Bluetooth & Wi-Fi (which may present in stock firmware). Beside that, it consumes very low phone resources & hence increases the battery power significantly.

CM has its own Customization panel packed inside with which you can change all the possible settings in your phone. For e.g. you can overclock your phone to increase the performance or under volt it to decrease the battery consumption. Of course, OC kernel is required to perform these operations.

Anyways, I think this much information is sufficient for you to understand about Cyanogenmod. So, let us move further where well be checking the steps required to install Cyanogenmod 9.3 custom ROM on your Sony Xperia U ST25i.

Pre-requisites:

  • Charge your phone at least up to 70% so that flashing process wont get interrupted.

  • Before proceeding to the actual installation procedure, ensure that you have unlocked the bootloader of your device. If you’ve not done it already, follow this guide.
  • Custom Recovery like Clockworkmod must be installed in order flash this ROM. If you’ve not installed it yet, follow this guide.

Procedure to Install Cyanogenmod 9.3 on Sony Xperia U ST25i:

  • Before proceeding to the actual installation procedure, ensure that you have unlocked the bootloader of your device. If you’ve not done it already, follow this guide.
  • Custom Recovery like Clockworkmod must be installed in order flash this ROM. If you’ve not installed it yet, follow this guide.
  • Please note that the above two steps are very much essential to install Cyanogenmod 9.3 on Xperia U.
  • Download latest Cyanogenmod 9.3 package from the link mentioned below.
  1. CM9.3 for Xperia U.

Note: Link has been updated to CM10 since link to CM9 package has been removed.

  • (Optional) Download Google Add-on Apps (Gmail, Maps, GTalk, Play Store etc.) which are not present in ROM by default.
  1. Google Apps
  • After downloading CM9.3 package, connect your device to PC. Enable mass storage mode on it. Now transfer ROM package & Google Apps to your device’s internal SD card.
  • Now disconnect the phone from computer. Boot in recovery mode on your phone. To do so, switch off the phone, switch it on again, when phone is restarting (during boot logo & LED turns blue), press Volume up button. Your phone will land in recovery mode.
  • Take a nandroid backup of your current ROM so that it can be restored back (in case if anything goes wrong). To backup your current ROM, select Backup and Restore option from the recovery mode & on next screen, select backup. Now It will make a nandroid backup of your whole system (excluding SD card). Wait for the backup process to get finished.
  • Now Select “install zip from sdcard” & then “choose zip from sdcard“. Navigate the ROM file (which you’ve transferred earlier) Select it & press on ‘Yes‘ to continue. ROM installation process will start.
  • Wait for the ROM to get installed. After ROM gets successfully installed, your phone will land in the recovery mode again.
  • Select wipe data/factory reset & wipe cache partition to wipe all the data & caches from the phone memory respectively
  • (Optional) The same procedure you have to do for installation of Google Apps. (Just don’t do the above step i.e, wiping data after installation of Gapps). After you finished installation of Gapps, press back button to go to main menu of CWM.
  • Select reboot system now from the recovery mode to Restart the phone. Switch off it again (since the procedure is not completed yet). Just keep the phone aside.
  • Now download the ADB & fastboot files which we will need to flash the kernel image.
  1. ADB & Fastboot Files
  • Extract above rar file to a convenient location/folder (Fastboot Folder).
  • Open Cyanogenmod 9.3 ROM package using WinRAR or 7-zip, extract boot.img file (which is nothing but a kernel) to any convenient location. (It is located in the root directory of the ROM).
  • Now move the kernel file (boot.img) where ADB & fastboot files are located.
  • On the phone (while switched off), enter into the fastboot mode. To do so, Connect your phone to the computer. While connecting press Volume up button to trigger fastboot mode.
  • Open the folder which contains ADB & Fastboot files.
  • Run command prompt.bat file to open command prompt pointing to the ADB & Fastboot folder.
  • Type the following command in command prompt to flash the kernel file:

fastboot flash boot boot.img

  • Restart the phone by typing “fastboot reboot” (without quotes) in command prompt.

Tip: In case if you want to restore back to your previous ROM , enter into recovery mode, select Backup and Restore option from the recovery mode & on next screen, select restore & choose your latest backup to restore.

Is there any bugs reported in CM 9.3?. Is CM 9.3 the latest version for ics?

    Thanks…..

  • Janaksinh

Why CM9.3 shows only 130mb free ram?

  • anmenz

do i need to downgrade from .100 to .10 before i can root?

    • Viraj SK

      Only kernel should be downgraded…

  • nikhil

    hello viraj
im currently using sony experia u wit ics(not via cm9) from sony itself.
i find that its made my phone incredibly slow in all spects.
wat do u propose i can do to improve the response of my phone?

    • Viraj SK

Clear app caches & uninstall useless apps..

  • Gianluca

I’ve followed all the instructions, but after the last command (fastboot reboot), the phone couldn’t start anymore. If I press the start button, it makes the usual vibration, but the screen remains black and so does the illuminated bar. Nothing happens then.
What can I do? I already tried to flash the boot.img again, but with no success…
Can I try to use flashboot with a different image? Which one in that case?

    • Viraj SK

Try flashing kernel first and then ROM…

  • Thiago

O link para fazer o Download do ADB e Fastboot no esta funcionando.

  • Bharat Satya

    • Viraj SK

      Welcome!!

  • neru

hi I’m neru how can I expand my internal memory of my st25i xperia u?

  • tono

What a great.. Thx for your share.. I did it, using CM9.3 on my xperia u. Very smooth and there’s no lag like it used to be.

But.. There’s something annoying with the BT (bluetooth) connection. It always “disconnect” when I paired with my external gps bluetooth i747 (with “bluetooth gps” apps from playstore).

Is there any upgrade kernel for CM9.3 to solve my bluetooth connection problem on my xperia u…?? :-(

    • abhishek

I know this is not the place to put up this question but does SONY has any of it’s official better performance rom apart from ICS firmware for xperia U of course.

P.S note that I’m just a novice in android development, or whatever you call it.

  • Sharrath M

I have rooted my phone, now i want to change to other rom.. wat to do and what are the procedures for it…

  • Robs246

    Hi,

has anyone successfully installed the ROM using this method, if yes, can you comment on how the performance is in terms of smoothness and free ram?

  • Tejas

hi, if you flash this rom and then flash again with stock rom does that restore everything, i mean with respect the validity for warranty.

    • Sanket

Yes…flashing of official firmware (stock rom) restores the warranty…

      • Soumeet

but in order to install this rom we need to root our xperia u, which means that our warranty is already gone… restoring to official rom won’t return our warranty, would it?

        • Viraj SK

Flashing stock ROM will unroot the phone & hence restores the warranty..

Can I use FXP213-cm-9-20130329-UNOFFICIAL-kumquat from freexperia for my xperia U? This looks to be an updated version. Also how do I upgrade it? Can I just override the FXP204-cm-9-20130126-UNOFFICIAL-kumquat ? Thanks.

    • Viraj SK

      Yes you can..

  • Leeness

Do I need to be on ICS prior to installing this?

    • Leeness

Nvm this – My last one wasn’t showing for a while.

      • Viraj SK

I think this won’t work career branded phone. It’s an unbranded firmware..

        • Leeness

Ok. But if I was on gingerbread could I use this to upgrade to ics?

        • Viraj SK

If you have Xperia U with model number ST25i then you can upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS.

        • Leeness

          Thanks :D

        • Viraj SK

          You’re Welcome Leeness!

  • Leeness

Do I need to be on ICS prior to installing this? If not will it have any effect on my phone carrier? (Data/plans etc) I cannot upgrade to ICS legitimately because they have not rolled it out for 2degrees(Phone carrier) people yet. And I don’t think they will. .__.
